What is a Hydraulic Filter?
Hydraulic filters in agricultural machinery are devices that clean hydraulic, engine, and transmission fluids from dirt, metal shavings, and water—protecting the entire hydraulic system and keeping essential components in good condition. Dust can be found even in new equipment, contaminants may enter through seals, metal particles appear due to wear and friction of parts, and water condensation forms inside the tank. A hydraulic filter protects the system from all these impurities. Failure to replace the filter on time or installing a low-quality component may lead to breakdowns and equipment failure.
Types of Hydraulic Filters
Depending on their function and installation location, hydraulic filters are divided into:
- Suction filters. Installed on top of tanks and the main pump (on the suction line). They protect the pump from large particles (250–30 microns) and are low-pressure filters.
- Inline hydraulic filters. Installed in the line between the reservoir tank and the pump.
- Pressure hydraulic filters. Installed on the pressure line after the main pump. These filters operate in medium and high pressure and use synthetic fiber or special paper as the filtering material. Their filtration efficiency ranges from 25 to 3 microns.
- Return filters. These clean the hydraulic fluid from impurities before it enters the tank.
By design, hydraulic filters can be either inline or spin-on.
Hydraulic filters are used:
- in industrial facilities in machining equipment and working units;
- in road construction and municipal equipment;
- in construction machinery;
- in forestry, earthmoving, and other specialized equipment;
- in various agricultural machines, as well as in the truck and automotive industries.
Hydraulic Filter Structure
These devices typically consist of:
- a housing (cover, cup – made of metal or plastic),
- a filter element – disposable (paper/glass fiber) or reusable (metal mesh),
- a bypass valve – a device that allows oil to flow through when internal pressure exceeds the maximum level specified in the manufacturer’s technical documentation. Not all filters include this component.
